Can Coolie and War 2 recover their investments in Telugu states?

Superstar Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s “Coolie” and the high-octane action drama “War 2”, starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR, are set to clash at the box office on August 14. Both films are big-ticket releases with massive expectations. Despite this direct competition, Telugu distributors have paid hefty sums for the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana theatrical rights of both movies.

Coolie needs to collect 90 Cr gross

“Coolie” was acquired for a staggering Rs 42 crore by the trio of Dil Raju, Asian Suniel Narang, and Suresh Babu. Their distribution firms will jointly release the film across the Telugu states. For the film to break even, it needs to gross nearly Rs 90 crore, which makes it a significant financial gamble.

While Rajinikanth continues to command a strong fan base, especially in urban centers, the simultaneous release of NTR-starrer “War 2” poses a serious threat. NTR is a Telugu superstar with a massive following, and his presence could split the market. Moreover, Dil Raju’s partner Shirish recently admitted that none of the Rajinikanth films they previously distributed managed to recover their investment. However, expectations are high this time due to Lokesh Kanagaraj’s successful track record, which may give “Coolie” the much-needed edge.

NTR’s name is enough for War 2?

On the other side, “War 2” is being released by Naga Vamsi under the Sithara Entertainments banner. Initially, Yash Raj Films demanded Rs 100 crore for the Telugu rights, but local buyers hesitated due to the heavy competition from “Coolie” and the teaser of “War 2” receiving mixed reactions, even facing trolling online.

Eventually, Naga Vamsi struck a deal with YRF for a significantly reduced amount, although the exact figure remains undisclosed. Despite the lowered acquisition cost, it still represents a substantial investment.

Though NTR is one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars, it remains uncertain whether a Hindi film—even one featuring him—can recoup the costs in the Telugu market, especially when releasing alongside a Rajinikanth starrer directed by a proven hitmaker.

Verdict? With both films clashing and targeting the same audience, recovery for either film is a risky proposition. The box office performance during the opening weekend will be crucial in determining whether these high-stakes bets pay off.
