The debate surrounding the portrayal of female characters in films continues to gain momentum. After director Buchi Babu apologized following criticism over the depiction of Janhvi Kapoor’s character in “Peddi,” discussions about the sexualization of actresses have intensified.
Actress Dimple Hayathi has now joined the conversation. Recently, Anasuya Bharadwaj shared a lengthy note, seemingly referring to the issue without naming “Peddi.” Dimple has now openly expressed her views, saying the ongoing public debate is a welcome change.
According to her, audiences often blame actresses for such portrayals, while the real responsibility lies elsewhere.“I am so glad that today we are all speaking about how actresses’ roles are being written. Don’t blame the actress for doing what she was offered. Blame the system and the makers who think that’s what sells,” Dimple wrote on social media.
She further stated that actors often work within the opportunities available to them, hoping to build bigger careers and reach wider audiences.
Dimple also emphasized that when female characters are poorly written, the accountability should rest with the writing and filmmaking choices rather than with the women portraying those roles.
“If the characters are underwritten, the responsibility lies more with writing and filmmaking choices than the woman playing the role. Unfortunately, actresses are often stereotyped based on the characters they play and are rarely given the opportunity to showcase their full potential,” she added.
The actress concluded by saying that the industry collectively deserves better filmmaking and more meaningful experiences for female performers.
Dimple Hayathi was recently seen opposite Ravi Teja in “Bhartha Mahasahyulaku Wignyapthi” and is currently working on director Sampath Nandi’s “Bhogi,” starring Sharwanand.
