Venky Kudumula: ‘Robinhood’ will be the best of Nithiin’s career

Venky Kudumula made a successful directorial debut with “Chalo” and followed it up with the hit “Bheeshma.” Now, as he gears up for the release of his latest film, Robinhood, starring Nithiin and Sreeleela, on March 28, 2026, the director shares insights into the project in an interview.

You were initially set to direct Megastar Chiranjeevi. How did Robinhood come about?

After Bheeshma, I developed a story for Chiranjeevi garu. He was quite excited about the initial concept, and as a huge fan of his, I put immense effort into crafting an exceptional script. However, somewhere along the way, I felt I couldn’t fully satisfy his expectations. It didn’t shape up as planned, so I told him I would return with another story in the future.

Meanwhile, I met Nithiin anna. I always shape my stories around the lead actor, and I had the idea for Robinhood long before my discussions with Chiranjeevi garu. Since Nithiin was keen on working together again, I pitched this story to him. My connection with him goes way back, as I assisted my mentor Trivikram during A Aa, which also starred Nithiin. That long-standing association made this collaboration even more special.

Tell us about the characters played by Nithiin and Sreeleela…

Nithiin’s character is a sharp manipulator, someone who firmly believes that mental strength surpasses physical strength. The film starts by showcasing him in multiple disguises within the first 20 minutes, after which the narrative takes an unexpected turn. The story is fresh, and I’m confident Robinhood will be the best film of Nithiin’s career. The movie blends fun and entertainment at regular intervals, making it a complete family entertainer.

Sreeleela plays a young woman who considers herself highly intellectual, but in reality, she’s hilariously quirky. Her role brings a great deal of humor, and her interactions add to the film’s entertainment quotient.

How did David Warner become part of the film?

I always thought having an international star in a cameo would elevate the film. Being a cricket fan, I casually suggested David Warner’s name to the producers, never expecting it to happen. But my producer Ravi took the idea seriously, arranged a meeting, and surprisingly, Warner was excited about the role. I met him in Delhi, presented the character, and he immediately agreed.

Why was Ketika Sharma chosen for the special song?

Initially, the producers wanted Ketika Sharma for a special number in Pushpa, but the role eventually went to Samantha. However, the idea of casting Ketika remained, and it materialized for this film.

People say your dialogue style resembles Trivikram’s. Your thoughts?

That’s the biggest compliment I could receive! Trivikram is my guru, and even though I worked with him for just one film, I’ve learned a great deal from him.

What genre interests you the most?

I love Chandamama-style storytelling—classic tales with a fantasy touch. I would love to bring that magic to my films.

Will you work with Megastar Chiranjeevi in the future?

Absolutely! I will definitely approach Chiranjeevi garu again with a story that excites him. It’s only a matter of time.
