Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja passed away in Chennai on Wednesday after battling age-related health issues. He was 84.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential directors in Indian cinema, Bharathiraja transformed Tamil filmmaking by taking stories out of studio sets and into authentic rural landscapes. His debut film, “16 Vayathinile”, starring Sridevi, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, became a landmark success and redefined storytelling in Tamil cinema. The film was later remade in Telugu by K. Raghavendra Rao.
Over a career spanning several decades, Bharathiraja directed numerous classics, introduced several actors and actresses, and played a key role in shaping the careers of many stars.
He also left a mark on Telugu cinema. “Seethakoka Chilaka” was a major blockbuster, while “Aaradhana”, starring Chiranjeevi, remains a memorable film in his career. “Kotha Jeevithalu”, featuring Suhasini, emerged as a decent success, though his film “Jamadagni” with Krishna failed at the box office.
Many of his acclaimed Tamil films reached Telugu audiences through dubbed and remade versions, including “Tic Tic Tic”, “Erra Gulabilu”, “Toorpu Velle Railu” and “Aathma Bandhuvu”.
A recipient of six National Film Awards, Bharathiraja was celebrated not only as a filmmaker but also as a talent spotter. He introduced several actresses, including Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha and Rekha. Apart from directing, he also appeared in several films as an actor.
With his passing, Indian cinema has lost one of its most visionary storytellers.
