Bramayugam

What’s it about?

A singer escaping from slavery arrives in a dilapidated mansion owned by an enigmatic aristocratic guy. Upon entering, the singer becomes aware that he has entered a relentless circle from which he cannot break free.

The setting is South Malabar during the 18th century. Devan, a singer, seeks refuge in a rundown palace owned by Kodumon Potty (Mammootty) and his chef (Sidharth Bharathan). Potty invites Devan to be his guest and sing songs for him. Devan, in dire need of food and shelter, agrees without hesitation.

Analysis

“Bramayugam” translates to “age of madness.” On the surface, the film appears to be a basic horror thriller about a demon, but it actually contains philosophical and political undertones. It primarily conveys the message about the harms of unfettered authority, as well as how people become addicted to power and therefore corrupt themselves.

The period drama is in black and white. The story, period, and genre have all aided the monochrome appearance. Director Rahul Sadasivan, with the able support of his actors and technical crew, provides an eerie experience throughout, and the black and white style accentuates it even more.

“Bramayugam” is a slowburn thriller. It discloses one aspect of the plot at a time. In the crumbling palace, time seems to stand still. So, the residents lose track of the days or years and feel burdened by time. As a result, it becomes a location and period of madness. All of these elements unfold gradually. The film begins with the singer’s arrival to this palace, and Mammotty is introduced as a loveable “peddayana”. The film then flips the dynamic between the young singer and the cook, slowly revealing the presence of a demon known as Chathan. We also get to see strangely looking woman. The riveting narration creates suspense and terror throughout the first half of the film.

The scariest aspect of this horror drama is not the presence of demon, the peculiar-looking woman, or the other elements, but Mammootty’s evil laughter. The performer delivers chilling moments with intense stares and laughter.

Interestingly, the director does not use the typical jumpscares found in horror films. He relies more on the actors’ performances, the atmosphere, and the technical department. Both the actors and his technicians have given the best output.

All said, the film is not that effective in later part of the story and the climax is very regular.

Mammootty gives a mesmerizing performance. It’s pretty surprising to witness him deliver the scariest experience to the audience with only laughs and looks. His commanding presence and menacing expressions have provided more thrills than the sound design. He is simply fantastic. Arjun Ashokan as Devan has also provided a credible performance. Sidharth Bharatan, the cook, also offers an amazing act. Amalda Liz as the woman with a different appearance is excellent.

Horror thrillers work well when technicians perform at their peak. Sound design and mixing are the primary strengths, complemented by a strong background music. The cinematography is creative as well. The production design is excellent. Director Rahul Sadasivan’s storytelling is terrific.

Bottom line: “Bramayugam” is a unique horror drama. A satisfying slow-burning film that needs your focus to fully get it. The combination of Mammooty’s spellbinding performance, direction, sound design, production design, and music results in a spooky atmosphere and an engaging viewing experience. But the latter segment of the film is regular. Still, it provides a different experience.
