Gaayaapadda Simham Review: Only scattered humor!

What’s Gaayapadda Simham about?

Darahas (Tharun Bhascker), at his girlfriend’s insistence, travels to the USA but is abruptly deported without any explanation, leading to their breakup. Back in India, his marriage is arranged with YouTuber Shalini (Faria Abdullah). Frustrated and humiliated, Darahas decides to take revenge on US President Donald Trump.

He turns to a friend, who connects him with an IAS aspirant-turned-black magician (Sree Vishnu). The magician asks for a strand of Trump’s hair to perform a ritual. Darahas somehow manages to procure it and sends it to Hyderabad via courier, but it gets misplaced at a logistics company run by Brutal Dharma (JD Chakravarthy). What follows is whether Darahas succeeds in his bizarre mission and how these characters ultimately connect.

Analysis

“Gaayapadda Simham,” with Tharun Bhascker in the lead, is built on an utterly whacky premise. The idea of a deported man plotting revenge on a US president through black magic is bizarre, yet intriguing on paper. With deportations becoming a topical issue, the backdrop feels timely, even if exaggerated for effect.

Written by Surya Prakash Joshyula and directed by debutant Kasyap Sreenivas, the film attempts to blend this quirky idea with spoof-driven storytelling. The concept of procuring a strand of hair from a global leader may sound far-fetched, but that absurdity is exactly what the film banks on.

To sustain such a premise, the narrative relies heavily on spoof elements. References to films like “KGF,” “Pokiri,” “Bommarillu,” “Salaar,” “Pelli Choopulu,” and “Arjun Reddy” are woven into the storytelling to connect multiple subplots. While a few of these work, many feel inconsistent.

The “Bommarillu” spoof featuring Sree Vishnu stands out as genuinely funny. The “Salaar” fight spoof also lands well, and the “Arjun Reddy” park scene towards the end adds a decent touch. However, the “KGF”-style narration, though amusing initially, loses its impact as the film progresses.

Though Tharun Bhascker remains the central character, the film frequently shifts focus to others. Sree Vishnu’s extended cameo and JD Chakravarthy’s role as Brutal Dharma, a crime-linked figure with an unusual aversion to violence, add to the film’s eccentric tone. Some character traits and situations are indeed quirky.

However, the biggest drawback is the lack of consistent humor. For a film that relies heavily on comedy, the laughs are sporadic rather than sustained. The scattered fun moments are not enough to carry the narrative, and this is where the film falters.

Performance-wise, Tharun Bhascker is adequate, while Faria Abdullah makes a neat impression in her limited role. Sree Vishnu brings some presence but his character could have been written better. Maanasa Chowdhary has a brief role, and JD Chakravarthy’s character needed more depth. Kamna Jethmalini’s cameo adds a slight spark. Subhalekha Sudhakar, Harsha Vardhan, Pradeep Rawat, and Jhansi perform their parts well.

Technically, the film is serviceable. However, it lacks catchy music, which further affects its overall impact.

Bottom line: “Gaayapadda Simham” banks on a quirky idea and offers a few laughs, but it needed sharper writing and more humor. It has weak payoff.

Rating: 2.5/5
