Mechanic Rocky review: The final hour compensates for early routineness

What’s it about?

Rocky (Vishwaksen), a failed engineering graduate, supports his father at their auto garage and also works as an instructor at their driving school. One day, Maya (Shraddha Srinath) enrolls in his driving school.

During her training, they develop a connection, and he tells her his story of assuming management of the garage following his father VK Naresh’s demise, as well as his romantic involvement with his engineering classmate Priya (Meenakshi Chaudhary).

Maya discovers Rocky’s troubles with Ranki Reddy (Sunil), who menaces to demolish the garage unless Rocky pays him Rs 50 lakhs within 10 days. Maya, who works for an insurance company, tells Rocky that his father has insured a sum of 2 crore, to which he, as the son, has a right. Maya’s extensive financial assistance creates additional complications.

Is there any motivation for Maya to assist Rocky, or is she genuinely in love with him?

Analysis

At the outset, “Mechanic Rocky” appears as a routine triangle romance between Vishwaksen, Meenakshi Chaudhary, and Shraddha Srinath, as it is only after the interval that we get to see the real point of the film. The new director structured the film in two different halves—the first half as a commercial mass entertainer and the second half as a thriller.

The narrative indicates that the financial needs and ambitions of the middle class serve as a foundation for cyber fraudsters to perpetrate their deceit. The film not only exposes a specific online fraud and the methods employed by the scammers but also presents this information in an appealing manner with its twists. The protagonist engaging in games with the scammers enhances the latter half of the film’s intrigue.

While new director Ravi Teja Mullapudi pulls all the tricks in his sleeve in the later half, he also bores us to death with his narrative in the first half by presenting the romance of the hero and comedy episodes in the most cringeworthy manner.

Numerous scenes in the film undermine the ingenuity of the subsequent twists.

In terms of performances, Vishwaksen mostly embodies a casual demeanor throughout the film; however, his portrayal remains credible during pivotal moments. Shraddha Srinath is the true scene-stealer. The actress possesses a robust character and delivers a compelling performance. Shraddha demonstrates her versatility. Meenakshi Chaudhary has finally secured a noteworthy part after portraying insignificant characters in four films this year.

It possesses decent technical merits.

Bottom line: “Mechanic Rocky” features a lackluster beginning, but the latter half is replete with engaging twists and turns to compensate for it. The plot concerning cyber-crimes is reasonably engaging in its latter half, provided one overlooks the clichéd portions.
