What’s it about?

Abhi (Naga Shaurya) is youngster who falls in love with Prarthana (Palak). While Abhi is encouraged by his father to fall in love and have his first kiss experience, Prarthana’s father doesn’t respect her. Prarthana too accepts Abhi’s love and soon they have their first ‘experience’ and Prarthana father catches them red-handed. He is ashamed of his daughter’s behavior and he throws her out from his home and she is welcomed by Abhi’s parents. Prarthana hates Abhi and she becomes close to her Facebook friend whom she never met in person. What she doesn’t know is that her Facebook friend is also Abhi. The drama is all about how Abhi realizes his mistakes and wins Prarthana and her family’s love.

Analysis

Abbayitho Ammayi is coming-of-age drama set in the backdrop of times of social media. How today’s youth have started treating their virtual friends more like real friends and in real life they getting confused with love and emotions is dealt by director Ramesh Varma. While the first half is not good as too much time is wasted establishing unnecessary things, the second half is told in a mature way. The climax sequences with superb background score by maestro Ilayaraja are the major strengths of the movie.

Interval bang twist and the climax portions are handled impressively.The film is told with superior visuals. Entire film looks visually stunning. And Ilayaraja’s background score in the emotional sequences has elevated the mood.

Naga Shaurya is at ease in this role, he has given his best. Palak Lalwani is suited to the role of student who is confused about her emotions. She is also beautiful. After long time, we have seen Mounaragam Mohan in a role, he is apt for. Tulasi as his wife gets better role and she has given best performance. Rao Ramesh has gone overboard. Pragathi is okay.

Like we said, the movie has relied more on the camera work of Sam K Naidu and Ilayaraja’s songs. Though the story is hackneyed, it is the visuals and picturisation of the songs that attract.

Dialogues are decent. Director Ramesh Varma’s strength are visuals and he is focused more on that in this movie too.

Bottom-line: Abbaitho Ammai is a neat coming-of-age drama about two youth in the backdrop of social media. Emotional scenes are good.
