“Akhanda 2” has completed 10 days of its theatrical run. The film has collected Rs 80 Cr India net so far. It needed to collect Rs 150 Cr net to get break-even, but by the end of its entire theatrical run it may not even touch Rs 100 crore.
Until the release of “Akhanda 2: Thaandavam,” the Nandamuri Balakrishna–Boyapati Srinu combination was considered virtually foolproof. The duo had earlier delivered three consecutive blockbusters with Simha, Legend, and Akhanda, creating a perception that their collaboration simply couldn’t fail. Naturally, expectations for their fourth outing were sky-high.
However, “Akhanda 2” proved that Boyapati Srinu can deliver a flop with Balakrishna, and vice versa.
Trade reports suggest that “Akhanda 2” resulted in losses exceeding 50 percent for distributors, both domestic and overseas, making it the biggest commercial failure in the otherwise successful history of this hit pairing.
While Balakrishna and Boyapati Srinu may collaborate again in the future, it is clear that their next project will not carry the same automatic hype. Boyapati is already facing difficulties delivering a hit with other stars, and he once enjoyed the reputation that teaming up with Balakrishna guaranteed success. With “Akhanda 2,” that long-held perception has been decisively shattered.
