The week gone by was not very welcoming to AR Rahman. It put him in the centre of a controversy regarding his daughter Khatija’s dress. Khatija attended an event wearing a ‘burqa’. The legendary Rahman was questioned by critics of patriarchy. They said, without any evidence, that the music director forced his daughter to wear the veil.
To deny these allegations, he posted a pic of his wife and sister not wearing the veil. “Feedom to choose”, he declared in the tweet. It was clear to everyone that Khatija’s choice is to wear the veil while the other two women in Rahman’s family don’t want to dress in a conservative manner.
The controversy came to an end totally when Khatija said on Instagram that it was her choice and not an imposition. “There were certain comments which said that this attire is being forced by my dad and that he has double standards. I would like to say that the attire I wear or the choices I make in my life does not have anything to do with my parents. The veil has been my personal choice with complete acceptance and honour,” she wrote.
