Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has opened to an impressive response at the Indian box office, collecting an estimated Rs 20 crore gross on its first day.
The three-hour R-rated epic, based on Homer’s classic poem, hit theaters worldwide on July 17. Shot entirely on IMAX film, the movie stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and follows his perilous journey home after the Trojan War.
The film has also opened strongly overseas. In North America, it is tracking for a domestic opening of around $117 million, boosted by $17.6 million in Thursday previews, while ticket sales have been exceptional in Greece. The film has also received widespread critical acclaim, earning a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In India, the film’s performance has exceeded expectations. After grossing around Rs 20 crore on its opening day, early trends indicate that collections on the second day remain equally strong, suggesting a solid opening weekend for Nolan’s latest spectacle.
