It has become a trend among top directors to either set their films in bygone eras or lean heavily on mythological themes. Very few are willing to attempt grounded, contemporary stories rooted in everyday life. Escapist narratives have become the safer choice.
Sukumar, too, followed this pattern with his recent films “Rangasthalam,” “Pushpa,” and “Pushpa 2.” But he is now set to break away from it and return to the modern, character-driven style he was once known for.
According to producer Ravi Shankar, Sukumar is currently developing a story set in present times, with Ram Charan in the lead. The script work is underway.
If Sukumar indeed delivers a contemporary drama that reflects today’s society, it could shift the dynamics in the industry. The Sukumar–Ram Charan project is expected to go on floors after summer 2026, with Mythri Movie Makers backing the film.
