The Justice Hema Committee investigation revealed instances of sexual harassment and exploitation inside the Malayalam industry. Multiple actresses have recently disclosed instances of harassment by prominent Malayalam actors and directors.
The Hema committee shed light on the negative aspects of the Malayalam film industry. However, maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma argues that unless other film industries establish similar commissions, the overall state of the Indian film industry will remain unknown.
He proposed that other film industries establish similar commissions to improve working conditions for women.
The issue of the casting couch is prevalent in nearly every film industry.
He wrote: “If Malayalam film industry has been exposed by the Hema Committee ,which has been constituted only for the Malayalam industry , then unless committees are formed for each of the other language industries , how will one know what’s happening there?”
