Godari Gattupaina Review: Rural charm, stretched narration

What’s Godari Gattupaina about?

Raju (Sumanth Prabhas) is an auto driver who quit his studies after the tenth standard and made driving his livelihood. He falls in love with Maya (Nidhi Pradeep), an engineering student and friend of his sister. Maya too develops feelings for him.

Maya is the beloved daughter of Shyam Babu (Jagapathi Babu), a security guard who dreams of getting his daughter married into a financially stable and socially respectable family so that she can lead a comfortable life.

Trouble begins when he discovers that Maya is in love with an auto driver. Will Shyam Babu accept their relationship, or will he force her into a marriage of his choice? That forms the rest of the story.

Analysis

After making his debut with “Memu Famous,” which was set in rural Telangana, Sumanth Prabhas returns with another village-based drama in “Godari Gattupaina.” This time, the backdrop shifts to the scenic Godavari region, with the film aiming to present a soft and breezy romantic entertainer filled with rural flavor and feel-good moments.

Director Subash Chandra adopts a relaxed and slow-paced narration. He spends ample time establishing the village atmosphere and introducing the characters. The first half mostly revolves around the budding romance between the lead pair and their playful interactions. Initially, the film feels pleasant and easy-going, but after a point, the leisurely narration becomes repetitive and stretched.

Several scenes give the impression that the director is delaying the core conflict unnecessarily instead of moving the story forward. While the first half offers a few entertaining moments like Sudarshan’s comedy and hero’s Maradalu’s ‘loda loda vaagudu’, and maintains a light mood in patches, the prolonged runtime affects the overall engagement.

The film touches upon themes like caste barriers, parental communication, and society’s perception of auto drivers. Though these themes add emotional depth, the screenplay does not explore them in a compelling manner. Some sequences also feel outdated in treatment.

Sumanth Prabhas delivers a neat performance as Raju. He carries the Godavari slang comfortably and has a natural screen presence. Nidhi Pradeep looks effortless on screen and performs her role with ease.

Reenu, who plays Mahalakshmi aka Maradalu, leaves a good impression with her lively screen presence. Sudarshan’s comedy turns out to be one of the film’s major strengths, generating genuine laughs at regular intervals.

The pairing of Jagapathi Babu and Laila feels fresh, though the film does not fully utilize them. Jagapathi Babu lends dignity to the father’s role and performs effectively in emotional scenes. Rajeev Kanakala, Devi Prasad, and others fit well into their respective parts.

Technically, the film scores with its visuals and music. The cinematography beautifully captures the Godavari landscape and village atmosphere. The songs blend smoothly into the narrative, while the production values remain adequate throughout.

Bottom-line: “Godari Gattupaina” is a regular rural love story that works in parts because of its pleasant Godavari backdrop and mild humor. While the pre-climax and climax portions leave some impact, the stretched narration and prolonged runtime prevent the film from becoming fully engaging. Overall, it ends up as a passable rural romance.

Meta Description:

“Godari Gattupaina” is a breezy rural love story featuring Sumanth Prabhas and Nidhi Pradeep. Pleasant visuals, comedy, and emotional moments work partly, but the stretched narration affects the film.
