Divorces in Tamil film industry: On the rise!

Like celebrity weddings, divorces involving film personalities generate massive headlines and public curiosity. In recent years, divorce cases in India have increased, but when it comes to celebrities, the scrutiny is far more intense. Ever since reports emerged about Vijay’s wife Sangeetha filing for divorce in a family court, social media has been abuzz with nonstop discussions.

While the Telugu film industry too has witnessed high-profile separations such as Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, the trend appears to be more visible in the Tamil film industry, popularly known as Kollywood, in recent times.

Here’s a look at some notable divorces in Kollywood:

Dhanush – Aishwarya Rajinikanth

Dhanush and Aishwarya, the elder daughter of Rajinikanth, ended their marriage after 18 years together. The couple, who have two sons, were granted divorce in 2024 by a family court in Chennai.

Jayam Ravi – Aarthi

Jayam Ravi, known for films like “Ponniyin Selvan,” announced his separation from wife Aarthi in 2024. They have two sons. Reports state he is currently living with singer Kenishaa Francis.

A. R. Rahman – Saira Banu

Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman and his wife Saira Banu announced their separation in November 2024 after 29 years of marriage. They have three children, all pursuing music. There has been no further legal update since the announcement.

G. V. Prakash Kumar – Saindhavi

G. V. Prakash Kumar and singer Saindhavi were granted mutual divorce by the Chennai Family Court on September 30, 2025, ending their 12-year marriage. They have a daughter. G. V. Prakash is also the nephew of A. R. Rahman.

Vishnu Vishal – Rajini Natraj

Vishnu Vishal and Rajini Natraj divorced in November 2018 after eight years of marriage. They have a son. He later married badminton player Jwala Gutta in 2021.

Amala Paul – A. L. Vijay

Amala Paul and director A. L. Vijay divorced in 2017 after marrying in June 2014. She has since remarried and has a son with her current husband.

Kamal Haasan – Sarika

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan also went through a divorce with actress Sarika. The former couple have two daughters, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan.

Following his separation, Kamal Haasan was in a long-term live-in relationship with actress Gautami. The two eventually parted ways after several years together.

Other prominent personalities who went through divorces include Prabhu Deva, Prakash Raj, Rajkiran, R. Parthiban, Soundarya Rajinikanth, Radhika, and Vanitha Vijayakumar, among others.
