Legendary music director A.R. Rahman, the first Indian composer to win an Academy Award, has landed in controversy following his recent remarks about the changing dynamics of Bollywood. Rahman, who ruled the Hindi film industry for many years, continues to be associated with high-profile projects such as “Chhaava” and “Ramayana.” However, the number of Bollywood films he works on has noticeably declined in recent years.
Speaking about this reduced presence in an interview with the BBC, A.R. Rahman observed that the Hindi film industry has undergone significant changes over time.
While discussing possible reasons for fewer opportunities, he indirectly alluded to a communal angle without clearly stating it as the sole factor. “It could be a communal thing,” Rahman remarked, a statement that quickly sparked debate.
His comment did not go down well with sections of the Bollywood fraternity and industry observers. Many felt that the Hindi film industry had embraced Rahman wholeheartedly and provided him a major platform that helped him achieve global recognition. They argued that attributing fewer projects to communal reasons was unwarranted.
Veteran writer Shobhaa De was among those who openly criticized Rahman’s remark. Reacting strongly, she said, “There is no question of religion being a factor if someone is not getting a chance. He is such a successful man, such a mature man; he should not have said it.”
Meanwhile, A.R. Rahman continues to remain active across industries. He is currently composing music for Ram Charan’s upcoming Telugu film Peddi, and the first single “Chikiri Chikiri” went viral.
