“Kaantha,” starring Dulquer Salmaan, hit theaters last month. Despite strong production design and promising sequences, the film failed at the box office. The failure was widely attributed to its long runtime and a wobbling narrative, especially in the second half.
Now, the film’s makers are looking for a second chance. Netflix has announced that “Kaantha” will premiere on its platform on December 12. The film will be available in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam. In Kannada it premiere with another title.
Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, “Kaantha” is set in 1960s Madras and revolves around a movie star, his mentor, and a budding actress, until a murder shakes up their world. Rana Daggubati plays a police officer investigating the crime; Bhagyashri Borse plays the female lead, while Samuthirakani appears as the mentor.
The film is produced by Rana Daggubati and Dulquer Salmaan themselves.
As it moves to OTT, the makers hope the wider reach will help audiences appreciate its artful production and storytelling, despite the theatrical failure.
