On Saturday, the Andhra Pradesh government announced tax-free status for ‘Mahanati’. Chandrababu Naidu proudly felicitated Keerthy Suresh and the biopic’s producers and hailed the film.
However, his government’s decision to exempt tax on the film is controversy-prone. The recent verbal protest by Gunasekhar is still fresh in minds. He was aghast that the government didn’t exempt ‘Rudrama Devi’.
Why are only films like ‘Gautamiputra Satakarni’ and ‘Mahanati’ deserving of the state’s benevolence? Why not a historical film like ‘RD’, many on social media are asking.
Fair treatment is expected. While ‘Mahanati’ deserves what it has got, the government should have given Guna’s film what it deserved.
