Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ is set for its OTT debut!

Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest release “Coolie,” directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is heading to OTT. The film will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in the second week of September, just four weeks after its theatrical debut on August 14.

Despite grossing more than Rs 500 crore worldwide, the film is considered only a modest success. Several distributors reported losses in key territories, and critics called it one of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s weakest outings. The mixed response dampened its theatrical run in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states, although Rajinikanth’s star power ensured 500 crore solid collection.

The OTT release is expected to give the film a new lease of life, especially among audiences who skipped the theatrical run.

Prime Video, which has acquired the streaming rights, is planning to premiere the film next week, though the official date is yet to be announced.

Produced by Sun Pictures on a massive budget, “Coolie” features Rajinikanth in a dual-shaded role, with performances by Shruti Haasan and Sathyaraj in key parts. Anirudh Ravichander composed the music.

With Rajinikanth’s films traditionally enjoying high viewership on digital platforms, the makers and the streaming giant are betting on “Coolie” to perform well online despite the mixed theatrical response.
