Singer Sunitha has issued a clarification after facing heavy criticism over her recent remarks. Her statement that when women say “my body, my choice”, men could similarly say “his eyes, his choice” triggered a strong backlash on social media, with many accusing her of failing to understand the essence of women’s rights.
Responding to the criticism through her Instagram Stories, Sunitha said her comments were being interpreted incorrectly and that she never intended to defend or justify inappropriate behaviour towards women.
“As a woman, I strongly believe in equal rights, equal opportunities, dignity and respect for women. I would never support or tolerate anything that harms or demeans another woman,” she wrote.
Despite the clarification, the controversy has put Sunitha in an uncomfortable position, with the debate continuing across social media platforms.
Sunitha is one of Telugu cinema’s most popular singers, with several chartbusters to her credit. Apart from her successful singing career, she is also a familiar face on television as a judge on reality shows. Her son, Aakash Goparaju, has also ventured into films as a lead actor.
