Villages don't need Srimanthudu, says RGV

Trust Ram Gopal Varma to come up with a controversy, he would never disappoint you. On any topical issue, he has a strong opinion, sometimes you may agree with his viewpoint, sometimes not, but he would sure make you quip or think about. The latest topic he chose to discuss is the newest trend of celebrities adopting the villages in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.

He finds that celebrities adopting a village are demeaning to the villagers. “I find this whole thing of celebs adopting villages very insulting to villages. No self respecting village will allow itself to be adopted,” he tweets.

He went on: “Imagine how insulting we will feel if a Hollywood star would want to adopt India reminding us that we are an under developed country. Do people who adopt think villages are orphans or beggars or handicapped or what? If villages have any self respect they should protest.”

Mahesh Babu’s Srimanthudu had this concept of rich guy adopting a village and working for its overall development. So people have started calling the person Srimanthudu if he/she adopts a village. Recently Mahesh Babu announced his plans to adopt a village each in Guntur and Mahabubnagar districts. On the other hand, Prakash Raj has already begun working for Kondareddipalle village in Telangana.

But RGV thinks this concept is totally wrong. He concludes: “Any village who is willing to be adopted is actually admitting that it is depending on left over morsels thrown at it by the rich and famous.”
