Weekend Box Office: Jana Nayagan opens strong but faces mixed outlook

Jana Nayagan, the final film of superstar Vijay before he transitioned fully into politics as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has registered a strong worldwide opening despite several hurdles.

The film was released without the usual star-driven promotions. Vijay stayed away from publicity, while only director H. Vinoth and producer Venkat K. Narayana promoted the film through a few YouTube interviews. The film had also been plagued by multiple setbacks, including an online print leak nearly two months before release and legal issues that delayed its theatrical release by six months.

Despite these challenges, “Jana Nayagan” has grossed around Rs 217 crore worldwide in its first four days. The Tamil version contributed the lion’s share of the collections, making it one of the biggest opening weekends for a Tamil film, although it fell short of creating a new record.

The dubbed versions, however, delivered contrasting results.

The Hindi version, released as Jana Neta, collected around Rs 14 crore in India, while the Telugu version, Jana Nayakudu, grossed approximately Rs 9.5 crore. It is the first time a Vijay film’s Hindi version has outperformed its Telugu release. Since the story is an official remake of Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari, Telugu audiences appeared to show relatively less enthusiasm.

While the film’s worldwide gross of Rs 217 crore in just four days is impressive, its long-term theatrical performance remains uncertain. Much will depend on how well it holds during the weekdays and in its second weekend.

Directed by H. Vinoth, the film stars Vijay as a former police officer. Pooja Hegde plays a journalist, while Mamitha Baiju appears as Vijay’s adopted daughter. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
