Genelia: I’ll continue signing films if the roles excite me

For many, the name Genelia instantly brings to mind the effervescent Haasini from “Bommarillu.” With several blockbuster hits to her credit and having acted alongside almost every top hero in South Indian cinema, Genelia carved a unique space for herself. After a long hiatus of nearly 13 years, the actress is back on southern screens with a key role in “Junior”, the debut film of Kireeti Reddy, the son of politician Gaali Janardhan Reddy. Now based in Mumbai with her husband, actor Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia recently made headlines for her appearance alongside Aamir Khan as well. Here’s an interview with her.

What drew you to the film “Junior”?

This project came to me three years ago, but I was unsure at the time. Riteish (her husband) was the one who encouraged me. He told me, “Just listen to the story once and then decide.” When I finally heard it, I was completely taken in. It was a character unlike anything I had done before. That’s what convinced me to take it up. I’ve always wanted to do roles that are new and challenging. Working with Kiriti was also a pleasant experience. He’s a very confident actor despite being it is his first film.

You stepped away from films when your career was at its peak. Any regrets?

Not at all. Life is about different phases. I’m proud of the films I’ve done and the characters I’ve portrayed. Haasini from Bommarillu, Madhumati in Happy…these characters are still so loved. Fans still call me by those names, and that brings me immense joy as an actress.

Will you continue acting now?

Definitely. If meaningful roles come my way, I’m all in. I’m not looking for lengthy roles. I’m looking for memorable ones. Even if it’s a small part, if it leaves an impact, I’d love to do it.

Any dream roles left?

Honestly, the fact that I’ve done such a variety of roles and received so much love from the audience already feels like a dream. What more could I ask for?

You worked with the legendary Kota Srinivasa Rao in Bommarillu. What do you remember about him?

It was a blessing to act alongside Kota Srinivasa Rao garu. I learned so much just by observing him. His passing is a huge loss to our industry. His legacy will always live on.

Your former co-stars like Ram Charan, NTR, and Allu Arjun are now pan-India stars. What’s your take on their journey?

It fills me with pride! They’re not just my co-stars but also my friends. Watching them grow into pan-India icons is amazing. They’ve always had extraordinary talent, and now the whole country is recognizing it.
