As kids we were forbidden to see the so called item numbers. That is because back then these item numbers were known as cabaret dances and were limited to adults only. There was a section of dancers who were popular just for these numbers. Like today they too gyrated for the villains at crucial points in the film. Now the scene is completely different. Cabaret dances are known as item numbers. From kids to oldies, weddings or festivals, these item numbers are played and everyone seem to enjoy them.
Popular heroines dance for these item numbers. It is not limited just to some group of dancers. The more raunchy you get higher will be the pay, is the mantra of these item numbers.
When compared to what is paid now and what was paid then for these dancers, it is quite shocking to see that there has been a ocean change. Then dancers got very less amount. They were looked down upon for performing in such number. But now the story is different. Doing an item number adds onto to resume.
The amount that is paid is simply astounding. Tamannah was paid a whopping Rs 75 Lakh recently for one item song. The highest perhaps. Kajal Agarwal took Rs 55 lakh home for her dance in ‘Janatha Garage’. Lakshmi Rai was paid Rs 40 Lakh for a single song for Chiranjeevi’s come back movie ‘Khaidi No 150’.
These numbers are popular and everyone seems to be enjoying them it has become a routine affair. A section of actresses who are not getting films are game for item numbers.
