This year, veteran actress Waheeda Rehman will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s top film honor. Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting (I&B), made the announcement on Tuesday.
Waheeda Rehman, 85, is the leading lady of India’s ‘Golden Age’ of cinema. Guide, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Teesri Kasam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Neel Kamal, Reshma Aur Shera, Chandini, and Lamhe were among her many popular films.
Throughout her six-decade career, she has received numerous major accolades, including the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. She also won a National Film Award for Best Actress for her work in “Reshma Aur Shera.”
“Rojulu Marayi” was Waheeda Rahman’s acting debut. In the song “Eruvaaka Sagaro Ranno Chinnanna” from the 1955 Telugu film, she appeared as a dancer. She also played a princess in “Jayasimha” (1955) and the heroine in “Bangaaru Kalalu” (1974) alongside Akkineni Nageswara Rao.
She relocated to Bombay at the age of 17 and began her acting career in Bollywood, where she was a part of several iconic hits. After a gap of three decades, she appeared in another Telugu film named “Chukkallo Chandrudu” (2006) as the grandmother of Siddharth.
