What’s the story of “Saraswathi” about?
Laxmi (Varalakshmi Sarathkumar), a nurse, lives with her daughter Saraswathi (Niviksha) after separating from her husband. Her routine life takes a shocking turn one day. She drops her daughter at school in the morning. When she returns in the evening to pick her up, the girl has mysteriously disappeared.
The school management claims that Saraswathi was never a student there. Stunned and desperate, Laxmi approaches Ramanujam (Prakash Raj), a reputed lawyer known for taking up cases only when he finds sincerity in the complainant.
Laxmi alleges that the school principal and two other guys raped and murdered her daughter. However, she has neither evidence nor even the dead body of her child to support her claims.
Though initially shocked by the strange circumstances, Ramanujam agrees to fight the case. His conviction is simple. No mother would fabricate a story about her daughter’s rape or murder. What really happened to Saraswathi? Is Laxmi telling the truth? Can the court proceedings uncover the mystery behind this unusual case?
Analysis
“Saraswathi” marks the directorial debut of actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, with the basic story written by the noted writer Sai Madhav Burra. On paper, the premise appears intriguing. A courtroom drama built around a mother’s disturbing allegation and the justice system’s response to it has strong dramatic potential.
The film attempts to highlight the injustices faced by women, particularly young girls who become victims of sexual crimes. It touches upon the painful reality that perpetrators often escape punishment due to loopholes in the system. At the same time, the narrative tries to underline the importance of the judiciary as a source of hope for victims seeking justice.
The movie begins on an interesting note, establishing a mysterious and emotionally charged situation. However, as the story progresses, the impact gradually weakens because the narrative becomes predictable.
The interval episode, which provides a solid dramatic moment, but the narrative struggles to maintain engagement as the movie progresses and it follows familiar patterns seen in many courtroom dramas.
The psychological angle related to Varalaxmi’s character, which resembles a fantasy disorder similar to split personality concepts used in many films, does not generate much novelty. As a result, the twists fail to deliver the intended surprise. Another issue lies in the writing of supporting characters. Their arcs lack depth and some key developments appear too convenient. As a first-time director, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar shows sincerity in dealing with a sensitive subject. However, the storytelling needed greater sharpness and tighter control.
The courtroom exchanges between Prakash Raj and Srikanth Iyengar, along with the judge played by Rao Ramesh, often appear theatrical. These scenes should have been gripping but instead feel somewhat stagey.
On the performance front, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar delivers a sincere performance and effectively conveys the emotional turmoil of a mother searching for justice. She shines in some crucial scenes.
Prakash Raj gets the most substantial role after Varalaxmi and anchors the film with his experienced performance. Priyamani and Kishore also perform well in their roles.
Thaman’s music works in parts. The cinematography complements the mood of the film. The production design is neat. The writing, however, needed sharper detailing.
Bottom line: “Saraswathi” carries a strong theme related to crimes against women and the justice system. The film has a few engaging moments and some interesting twists. At the same time, the overall narration is uneven. Certain portions work well, while others feel theatrical.
